...were not meant to experience? It is sheer hell to be without a voice, without a "you". It's horrifying. you become extraordinarily alert and compassionate though, and see people for who they really are and not in reference to you. I think selfishness and self preservation cannot exist without the ego, but since without a body you can't be compassionate then destroying the ego is pointless. Maybe a reduction of the ego is a good thing, but total destruction - No.
