Are there many kinds of salsa dancing? my friend said there is cuban, dominican and ballroom salsa styles. If there are different kinds of salsa, are they very different from each other? and how?
There is salsa, and mambo. Mambo is the daddy of all latin rhythms and is pretty much like salsa except you start on the 2 instead of the 1. There's also cha cha, which is danced to "slower" songs, and rumba to really slow songs, and samba, which is a completely different feel, but is still latin. Also merengue which is the simplest dance because you step on every beat (why a lot of people hate it, it's so simple). Bachata is becoming popular but I haven't encountered much myself- I do know that club style is very sexy (like the latin version of grinding GROSS)
Salsa differs regionally and I know that New York salsa is different than Los Angeles salsa. I've never been to NY so I don't know but I've been told it's more like mambo and you really feel the music. I've also heard something that the measures change randomly in the music but I don't know where that happens regionally.
Ballroom salsa is more showy and takes up a lot of space. In LA if you did some of that fancy ballroom salsa you'll take out 3 or 4 couples, LOL. Club salsa is very linear and contained, because there's so many couples. Also club salsa usually has live bands which play for about 15 minute for ONE song.
