is diesel smoke bad for the environment?

I want to be more green and i have a 1994 dodge ram diesel that makes huge clouds of smoke when i step on the gas. i took it to the mechanic and he said it is supposed to do that because of the pump or something. I tried the dodge dealer and they said the same thing. I am worried that this is bad for the environment. is it possible that it is?
 
yes it deff is it a diesel engine can run on three basic types of fuel petroleum diesel, biodiesel, and straight vegetable oil (SVO) Any diesel engine can run on biodiesel. Biodiesel is a clean-burning fuel made from domestic, renewable plant sources, such as oils from vegetables, peanuts, soy beans, canola/grape seeds, hemp seeds and some grains. so ur best bet is to just run ur truck off of vegatable oil.
 
If you use your truck as a truck you are fine. No one makes anything better to do the job than a truck. I will blow that black smoke at the "green" cars whenever I can.

Diesel emissions are better than gas emissions, more particulate(visible), but less carcinogenic. Don't tromp on the throttle,ease on to it, you will have less emissions. Diesel is easier to make(less steps in refining), it's only one step up from kerosene. Try going to a truck/fuel stop near you and buy some Diesel fuel additive, Howes or Power Service. Do the math on the summer treatment(ounces of treatment/gal of fuel), and start adding when you fuel up. You will get the cost of the jug(12-13$) in fuel savings, and as a bonus add lubricity back in that the sulfur use to provide to the motor.
