Is diesel or regular gas worst for the environment?

I was watching a group of diesel trucks drive by, and saw a large amount of black smoke being emitted from them. Of course, from seeing this, I immediately thought of the excessive amount of pollution they were causing. My brother, a hardcore diesel truck fan, however disagreed with me and said gasoline is far worst than diesel...

Is that true? And how is that possible?
 
they both are bad.
Diesel has high emissions and Gas. . . well the process to make it into gas gives of high emissons into the enviorment
