Is (cooking) oil dangerous after being heated to a certain temperature?

I've heard that cooking/frying with oil can be dangerous if it gets too hot, resulting in some sort of release of chemicals or poison. Not sure if it could be related to the flash/fire point.
I'm skeptical about it. Clarify? If so, what would that temperature be?

In order to answer this question we would need to know what kind of oil.
Each type of oil has a different temperature in which it starts to break down, this break down can release free radicals, this of course is not the greatest for your body.
Oh yea the flash point is important also in order to avoid fire.

Never throw water onto an oil fire unless you are wanting to burn down your house.
