Is boxing a good sport for me to get into?

Well I've been an active wrestler for four years. But now I'm terribly out of shape since I graduated. I want to get back into shape...I don't necessarily want to compete in boxing anytime soon, but maybe after a year or two of training. Anyway, would boxing be a good thing for me to get into? My goals right now are to get in shape, have fun, spar, learn some hand techniques, perhaps later on compete, and get into the MMA scene later in life. I'm about to turn 18. Thanks.
 
Actually, that sounds like a good plan. Learn proper striking techniques, get real time sparring experience, build stamina. All good reasons to start boxing.

By the time you start training for MMA, you will have the wrestling and boxing background, as well as experience sparring. So you will not be a stranger to hand to hand combat anymore.
