Is Blu-ray all just a marketing gimmick from the entertainment and electronics industry?

I recently bought an HDTV, Blu-ray player, connected them together with an HDMI cable and set it on 1080p. In addition, I spent some money a couple of Blu-ray discs. The picture quality of the Blu-rays is only slightly better than a good DVD on a standard definition TV. What gives?

I felt like I've just been ripped off by a bunch of marketing executives in Hollywood, who can't come up with any better ideas but to make people believe that this new technology is a lot better than what existed a couple of years ago. I thought that Blu-ray was going to be "amazing" only to find out that it's only slightly better than it's predecessor. Did I just have really high expectations or was I, along with many other people, really duped by Hollywood executives?

*However, I will have to say that my Xbox 360 looks PHENOMENAL in HD. OMG, now that's what I call AMAZING!

**And please keep in mind, I am not angry. I like the new equipment I just bought recently. I had to replace my old equipment anyway and, in the process, help out the economy. But, I just had really high expectations and was disappointed...you know, like one of those "Oh. that's it..." moments.
