Is bicycling a good workout?

It's been about a year since I've been working out, for many different reasons.

I wanted to start working out again, but I really don't enjoy running anymore. I did before I stopped working out, but as women may know, it hurts when you have big thighs. (embarassing) So, I thought about bicycling, and I've had a bicycle machine I rarely used since I used to run a lot.

Is bicycling a good workout ? Or should I suck it up and go back to running ? I just didn't want to start running again since it's been awhile. I thought I'd bicycle for a few months then start running again. Good idea ?

Do you know how long I should be bicycling to do a good workout session ? Since there's nothing telling me how much calories I've burned and how far I've gone, which only sucks about that machine. But thanks.
