Is Bicycling a good way to exercise...?

I just purchased a bike yesterday with a cateye velo5 mini cpu thingy, and I wanted to know what points would you give a beginner who's interested in biking? I've got to lose some weight before I can join the Air Force :(

should I aim for 3 miles per day or more?
 
Cycling elongates the muscles/running shortens them,both are good exercises.But you need to do sit ups.push ups[at least 30 each] bike 6 miles and run 2 miles,these are what you are going to exper. in boot camp. dont start off to harsh ,slowly make these your goals and you will achieve your personal goal .[to be ready for the military]
