Is Bi-Polar Disorder being misdiagnosed or mistaken for Mood Swings?

NO, Not ME, silly!

If some one suffers from a lot of mood swings, isn't it just a confusion of ideas or misunderstanding of events or situations rather than BPD!

Are people with mood swings being put into a box rather than given a chance to sort out their confused thoughts?
disaster girl - thanks for your input. many sites are not so descriptive

shirleyf - thanks for sharing. It is hard to identify a disorder without someones' own personal experience/

My mother had bipolar disorder. The changes she experienced were much more dramatic than mood swings. She would be severely depressed for days, not leaving her bedroom except to use the bathroom. Then, she would be "up". These were not pleasant, fun filled moods. She was angry, agitated, hostile, super energized and verbally abusive. She acted out sexual flirtations with men she wouldn't otherwise give the time of day to. She became extremely paranoid and distrusted everyone. She would dress up and walk up and down our street swinging her hips. Many people like this end up living on the streets and self medicating with drugs/alcohol. They can be the life of the party and then the next day not even be able to communicate with someone. My poor mother had no maternal instincts at all. Her moods consumed all her energy and her mental capacity to function as a normal person. Hope this one example will help you understand there is a huge difference in symptoms in someone with bipolar disorder and someone who is just moody. I forgive her for neglecting us kids because I understand she was mentally ill and couldn't control a lot of her behavior.
