i got in an argument with my friend the other day about whether baseball was a game or a sport. I said that baseball was a sport. His reasons of why baseball is a game is because you do not need much athletic ability. So, is baseball a game or a sport?

It's a sport. If it doesn't take that much skill then people would not be getting paid 20 mil a year. Players are a lot faster and stronger then you think. They also possess a monumental sum of coordination when they capture the falling ball from a 400 foot sloped descent that continuously slices through air particles at a tremendous unfathomable velocity. The reason the players and members of the MLB don't show much enthusiasm because they play everyday.

Also, "One plays games for fun, one plays sports to win." - Hernando Cortez during his conquest of the Aztec empire.

well honestly anything can be a sport. even competitive eating and extreme unicycling are considered a sports... and just because something is considered this doesn't make it any more important. making another thing seem lesser is due to your own opinion. a game is like monopoly, a board game, or like a scheduled event, like having a baseball game.

Based on those definitions, it's almost a game. I say this because the athleticism isn't as pronounced as say basketball players or football players. However, you need to be in shape and athletic for those sudden bursts of speed with split-second timing to steal a base and the hand-eye coordination is off the chart when it comes to batting. There's a skill I bet your friend could never possess. And if it doesn't require athleticism, then why are there no fat or old men playing professional baseball??

Just MHO...

its a game within sports.... it takes a lot of athletic capabilties thats why everyone is popping steroids,

even hitting in softball can be difficult at times,

Id like to see your friend hit my slider... ha!
