Is AT&T rebooting your phone and draining your batt?

Take a look at this article:

http://mobilewiseguy.com/2009/08/16...0-sales-stopped-in-south-florida.aspx?ref=rss

Now the headline says E71, but I bet they meant E71x. I also know this is talking about south Florida, but....

Lately it seems my e71-2's battery life hasn't been very good, and I have been running into rebooting problems as well which is definitely a WTF moment. I don't know if it's related to anything AT&T did on the network like the article mentions, but it just seems odd...and now i'm curious about it.

So I'm wondering if anyone else has been experiencing anything odd lately with their S60 device. You'll have to be using their (AT&T's) 3g network to notice anything (supposedly).

EDIT: This other random post mentions the issue and battery life.

Not sure if it's fully related, but my N95-3 used to reboots by itself when I set Nokia Messaging to be online 24x7. Now that I set it to only sync from 6am-11pm (offline the other times)...no more reboots by itself.

Because of a third channel that was recently deployed as stated in the articles and a bug in the firmware that causes them to reboot, which is why sales of the 6650 were halted. Apparently this bug affects unbranded e71-2 and the e71x.

Phones don't need to reboot to re-establish a connection to the network if it is lost. If it has to do that, then there is a problem with the phone's software. That's complete rubbish that they told you that as other Nokia phones don't have the problem in the same areas as the e71 (as stated earlier in this thread by someone who had an N97 and E71 in the same area).

If you are talking about an e71-2, which it sounds as the e71x was not available until May 2009, this is not an AT&T phone spec'd by AT&T and provided to by a vendor.

Whatever the situation is with the network, these phones do not need to be rebooting all the time to handle the network, that is rubbish. This is a problem with the software.

Hell, even the iphone had a problem where it would lose network connectivity due a bug in the software until it was rebooted, which had to be done manually. This is a software problem, and the latest iphone firmware lists that this problem is one of the fixes in that release.

But that isn't what's going on with the e71, it's just rebooting randomly in certain areas. Nokia needs to address this. It's as simple as that.

Interesting, ok so this is primarily happening in markets that have 3 WCDMA channels, which for now is only Miami area(if that is "southern FL"), and is indeed affecting the unbranded e71-2 (no surprise there). I wonder what other 3g S60 devices are having problems in that market.

My rebooting problems are more than likely unrelated to the network, and more related to python i bet.

I'm in Orlando, don't know the general area they are referring to, but my Nokia phones have no problem with ATT, I get strong 3G and no reboots ever *spontaneous that is.

I'm in the New York City Market and my Nokia E71 chronically reboots. Most in high usage parts of the network. It happens mostly near my home area in the Financial District & at&t response it there is a "power issue" with the tower. I've been down this road in the past with at&t and the Motorola V3x. Same thing was happening then Connection errors, dropped calls and random reboots without warning. At that time it was the timing of the iphone that caused the error. This time as supported by an article in the NY time it appears to be the iphone 3Gs that is the culprit. Either way at&t has oversold their service and it sucks because I love my phone.

Anyone in the market for a E71-2 NAM unlocked phone?

I'm in NY, strong 3G signal. My E71 has rebooted several times over the past week. I'm like this is total bull-****. Now I read this. ****ing Nokia's are sucking wind right about now.

Alright you convinced me!!

I spent an hour on the phone waiting to speak with tech support at Nokia.

I was informed that there is a new Firmware v300.x.x. However, it appears that this is not solving the issue for anyone else.

I'm sending in the phone although based off the responses so far through the forum I'm not that optimistic.

It's a shame this has been, prior to recent event, one of the best phone's I've ever owned.

Yes, I upgraded yesterday. Issue persists.

I thought it might be a temporary issue but its been going on too long. Again, it will work for a few minutes after I power cycle or flip the antenna. But after awhile it will return to the unusable state.

I should clarify too, if I power cycle the antenna while at home, sometimes there will be no bars, sometimes I'll get full bars and then it will drop off. If I'm returning home and I'm on dual or UTMS I seem to have full bars until I attempt a call.

Like I said, over the past few years I always remember my area getting technology prior to it being rolled out throughout the county (Full 3G, 3.5G, 3G on 850mhz), so I wouldn't be surprised if more people start seeing this.

Or my phone is complete crap (lol)... though why it works fine when I leave my home area... is anyones guess.

In NW Indiana, and this is the second time this week that my N97 has rebooted on me during a call. Last one happened this morning on my drive, had the N97 attached to the car's BT system and I'm here talking, talking and wondering why my wife isn't responding...then I pull the N97 out of my pocket and it's on the Nokia boot screen.

Think I'll switch over to the E71 and see if it's AT&T or the N97...my bet is on the N97

Interesting. I have to visit San Diego in a week, so I'll get a chance to test my n85 and upgraded 6650 there.

I think AT&T is rolling out the 3rd channel stuff. A friend in another area reported trouble with his 6650, until he upgraded to 3.26 firmware OTA. Since then he hasn't had trouble.

I have not had any battery life problems.

I do notice occasional rebooting issues. The spontaneous reboot seems to happen when I am using memory in an unusual fashion. For example, if I have exited Conversation for a long time, but then try to go into the application again, and I have many threads stored with many MMS messages included in that storage, I will occasionally reboot.

After the reboot, everything is fine. If I remember to clear out the Inbox occasionally, everything is also fine. It's only when I have many long threads (like 300+ messages total, with many of them MMS) that I have this issue.

This is an E71-2.

Firmware is 200.21.118 and as many of you will be aware, it is impossible to upgrade this RM-357 to the 300.21.012 without jumping through hoops.

I'm not ranting or anything. It's still a great device, and the rebooting isn't that frequent...but it's nevertheless traceable to a particular set of circumstances.

I'm on a 3G and 3.5G AT&T system, but I've never had the feeling that the rebooting was in any way related to the system.

Interestingly, a long time ago in a separate thread dealing with NYC 850mhz overlays, it was indicated that they were deploying 2 channels on 850mhz, which would add up to 3 channels total. There was never any super solid evidence of this, but it did sound like a very high possibly, and even a reality. That may very well be the cause of your e71's rebooting in those super high traffic areas, where 3 channels would be most useful. Just speculation though.

So its definitely areas with 3 carrier channels? Wonder why this would happen.

Just to add my part, i haven't had any reboot problems with any s60 phone in years here in socal.
