I'd love for those saying that anime has taken a nosedive to give some examples, or at least back up that claim a little better. After looking at anime releases year by year, I just don't see it. If anything, doing so has made me wonder if the quality of the average anime release has improved. 2009, for example, was an excellent year for anime. Cencoroll, Cross Game, Eden of the East, Eureka Seven, Fullmetal Alchemist, Haruhi Suzumiya, Kara no Kyōkai, Kimi ni Todoke, Maria Holic, Natsume Yuujinchou, One Piece Film: Strong World, Spice and Wolf, Summer Wars, Taishō Baseball Girls, and Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 would be highlights in ANY year. A few of those are some of my all-time favorites.
The year 2000, which many seem to believe was a stellar period for release quality, had FLCL, Escaflowne, Initial D, and a slew of harem and magical girl anime.
Seriously, I'm going to need some convincing.
