I'm getting really into backpacking lately, and as I'm sure many have before me, want a little company. The Irish Wolfhound is my favorite breed, but I don't want to get one if he can't participate happily in my lifestyle. I like to go out for days.
I've read up on them these past few days, and notice several mentions of them being strong sight hounds, and chasing whatever they see. I don't think this would be too much of a problem, but often my improvised routes take me within sight of old, but still moderately used, roads. I'm afraid he'll see a car and take off - with unfortunate results. In my research, I've noticed mentioned several times that the breed is very independent. Will he listen if I call him back if -when?- he goes after a car? And can I trust him not to sprint through busy roads (during out of work hours the road is used fairly heavily.)?
I would appreciate it very much if anyone with experince in this matter could give me some advice.
