Is a woman's fertile period as long as the media makes it seem?

I keep hearing conflicting information in pop culture on a woman's window for pregnancy which are confusing me like crazy.

In shows or movies where the character's do NOT want to concieve a child and are having it off on a one night stand or such the chances always seem to be greatly in favour of them getting pregnant, which they nearly always do ("Friends", "Knocked Up")

However when a couple is purposely trying to have children it is always seen as an exact science of calculating days, hours and even minutes of ovulation, bringing the window down to what seems like an impossible few hours (Also "Friends" with Monica and Chandler, "Brothers and Sisters").

With the skyrocketing number of teenage pregnancies my mind keeps automatically assuming that the fertile period has to be AT LEAST a week up to maybe two weeks.

Is it really that long or does society as a whole just have a LOT of of unprotected sex, enough for numbers occuring in this small gap of time to be large?
