is a used 1989 toyota tercel in good running condition for $600 a good deal?

i am 18 years old and looking for a cheap reliable car that can get me to work and soon to college. my friends mom is selling me this car for $600and says it has never broke down on her. it has about 140k milege but it just looks embarrising to drive when everyone else has nice modern cars.
it is a brown color with a desert brown interior
