Torrents and p2p is perfectly legal. Anything can be sent with them. So copyright violations are common and illegal. You can also share pictures or documents of yours with others this way. As far as the different clients, there are at least 40 out there. If you wish to pirate media download this, it's free:peerblock.com

+ whats the difference between utorrent and bittorrent i prefer utorrent and bittorrent there both P2P engines and if the bittorrent network is illegal then why don't they block it shutdown the network
i know that the FBI look at the peer lists on utorrent but then people just get ipfilters then there ip is hidden what do they do then don't criticise ok

The illegal or Legal depends on the files which you download (as the other people said in their answers)

But Note that there may be a problem with your ISP.
Because some ISP,s won't let you to use P2P connections(for some reasons such as bandwidth drops for the others) & may disconnect their services for you.

You can ask them about their policies about using p2p & torrents.

First of all, UTorrent = BitTorrent, the names are just different.
P2P connection isn't always illegal, eg. Blizzard's Launcher for WoW uses P2P connection.
But torrents ARE illegal, since you didn't actually BUY the thing you have downloaded.
They don't block it because there is no purpose in blocking, because if somebody downloads the game, and tries it, he might buy it, so the companies may make some money out of it.
But they lose more then they gain though.

Totally legal. The ''ILLEGAL'' is the software and cracks, and some copyrighted materials that is being uploaded and seeded cause by the uploader.
