Is a Nikon D40 a good photography camera?

It is much better at photography than, say, email. It's a camera.

It happens to be (ok, was) one of the better beginner models out there. The camera is capable of taking "pro" level pictures, if you are.

Non-photographers will probably take you seriously. Would pro shooters? Probably not.
 
I am just starting photography, and I would like to know YOUR opinion if this is a good starter camera? and will people take me serious with this camera?

He also hangs the D40 on the end of a Nikkor 300 mm f/2.8 lens when shooting NBA and WNBA games.
