Is a late 90s ford thunderbird a good first car?

i am a teen driver thinking of buying a thunderbird for my first car because they get decent gas mileage (24 with a V8) and they are also about 700-1000 dollars.

Could any current/previous owners tell me if it would make a good first car for a teenager, and how much would the insurrance be for that car as a teen?

Yes! I had an 89 for T-bird for my first car and I loved it! It was strong, sturdy (not horrible in crashes like most cars now - it's actually made of metal, not plastic) and handled well. It had a lot of miles on it before I *thought* the transmission was going out. Turned out it just needed tranny fluid. Oops! lol

But T-birds have alot of great features even if they are old.

However, if you live in an area with snow, they are not very good because they have rear wheel drive and spin-out in snow. For an inexperienced driver this can be a BIG problem.

well, ford does have a bad reputation for 'found on road dead' but you should definetly ask the seller a lot of questions, such as
has the oil been changed regularly
last time the timing belt was replaced
how are the brakes
if its a manual- how long since the clutch was replaced
look at how many miles are on the car
how many previous owners, if its had a lot of previous owners, they might have driven the crap out of it and it might be about to blow up.
honestly, if your looking for a nice sporty car with good gas mileage i would look for a honda prelude, or 2 door civic/accord coupe. maybe an acura integra from the 90s.
hondas and acuras have a reputation of being very reliable. no matter how much they have been driven the crap out of. and you can find a honda civic hatch on craigslist for cheap!! they are great cars and insurance would be much cheaper on a honda.
i know this from much experience. i have had 9 cars in the 3 years i have been driving and learned the hondas are the cheapest most reliable. although i do own a ford now and i love it, i would reccommend just doing your research and finding out if it will be reliable for you.
even though it may be cheap to buy, if its not been taken care of, it could cost a lot more to maintain.
thats just my opinion though, im no expert!
