I'm 20 years old and its time for me to pick a career path. I make straight A's in college, I am finished with almost all of my general eds, so any subject is open to me. My parents think I'm too brilliant to go into anything but science. They want me to major in biochemistry, which I would not mind doing, since I do have a fondness for science, but I don't know if it is going to lead to the life I want to live.
Honestly, as much as I love academic subjects like biology, psychology, chemistry, philosophy, etc. I can't ignore that I have a deep, undying passion for design. I've been doing graphic design since the 8th grade. I have three graphic design internships under my belt. I love it. It completes me.
I want to go into the arts. I was thinking of double majoring in graphic design and theater design. I love the environment of the theater and I think starting my career out as a lighting, costume, set designer would be the most exciting thing ever. I would die for a job on broadway. I'm wondering though, am I setting my hopes a little too high? Is it actually plausible to land a job in theater design? Later on in life I'd want to open my own design studio, but for the time being, I'd be content working on broadway shows. So, should I pursue my dream or play it safe with science?
