brakes not handle breaks.? I'm getting a bike to ride on city streets and on campus. I'm worried the pedal brakes will send me flying if I brake at a high speed. Or do they make them so that thy gradually brake now? The only kind I can remember for what they were like is the ones that were on my little kid bike.

Coaster brakes only work on the rear tire and only as hard as you want. Even if you lock up the wheel you can still steer. They ride fixed gear bikes around the city all the time and have to lock up the rear tire in an emergency.

The coaster brake (pedal brake) that you speak of is much more efficient now than it was in years past. It hasnt really changed all that much, still the same old design. It will be fine and what matters most is the operators ability to control the bike (no different that any other human or motorized vehicle) If you can ride well then it should be obvious that you might want to walk....? Beach cruiser or whatever else you want to use is up to YOU. No need to brake at a high speed (youre on a BEACH cruiser, how fast do you really think you can go?) if you are ridding it with your EYES OPEN!
