I'm buying my first car as I enter my second year in college. They look decent, get great gas mileage, and aren't too expensive. However, I have heard there are some issues with reliability. Supposedly they break down a lot,are unsafe, and are expensive to maintain. I am 3.5 hours away from home and plan to visit once a month from college. Is this a good option for me, or should I go with the other two cars I am considering: 05 Hyundai Elantra or the 04 Pontiac Sunfire? or perhaps something else?

My budget is pretty tight. $4500. Maybe $5000. My parents will also not consider anything smaller than a Honda Civic or anything above 80,000 miles.
I have heard a lot of bad things about the transmission too.
