Well, $1,000 isn't much for a car these days, so if the Jeep runs well and is in pretty good condition it may be worth it. I would definitely have a mechanic look it over though, even if you have to pay a little for the inspection. Since you're so young, you have little experience with cars and wouldn't recognize a dangerous problem without help.

165,000 miles is quite a few miles and you can bet you're going to have to fix some things. Of course, that will be true for any car that costs $1,000. Sadly, cars are expensive, no matter how you look at it. Will you get another 100,000 from it? Well, I haven't heard of too many cars with 265,000 miles on them, so while it isn't impossible, I'd say probably not. But at 17, do you really think you'll that much driving? Our Jeep has been pretty good, and it has more miles than that on it. But we've taken excellent care of it.

If you spend $1,000 and use any vehicle for a year or two, you're doing really well. Take good care of it, regular oil changes are crucial! And if something starts going wrong, jump on it quickly, don't wait until it gets worse and messes up something else too.

In the end, you can never be sure of anything about a car other than that it will cost you more than you expect, no matter how good it is. That's why an inspection before buying, and excellent maintenance afterwards, are very important.

im looking for my first car as im turning 17 soon, and i found a 1993 jeep grand cherokee with 165 thousand miles on it for only a thousand dollars. is it worth it? how long do jeeps generally last? do you think i could get another 100k miles on it without it breaking or costing me a lot to fix?

I bought a 95 with 180,000 for 1100.00 and have now 285,000 on it and i have put maybe three hundred into it in over 4 years. The jeep 4.0 is one of the best engines in the world today and they are bulletproof. DO NOT! Beat on the vehicle ! I know your 17 and its in your nature but if you want to save money take my advice. If it breaks and your pissed off at it its probably gonna be your fault for pounding on it. Not just for Jeeps but for whatever you buy if you treat it right and change the oil on it every 3K - 3500 and do regular upkeep you can drive most any American made vehicle for three hundred thousand miles. A thousand bux for that vehicle if not all rusted to heck isnt a bad buy at all. Take it run with it and dont beat it and you could drive this truck for another hundred to 150,000 miles---easy.
