i havent seen any of the recent 3D movies but they seem to be catching on. my question is when did this all start?

all i remember is the journey to the center of the earth movie was the first 3D movie in a while, then that one with the bugs came out saying it was the first animated 3D movie and then it just kept popping up.

and is 3D advancing the films technology or is it all just a gimmick?

There were a couple before Journey to the Center of the Earth. There was Meet the Robinsons. Also, the Robert Rodriguez kids' movies Spy Kids 3-D and The Adventures of Shark Boy and Lava Girl. However, I think the thing that really got 3-D into people's view again was Imax 3-D, which was largely just used for documentaries when it started (apparently, the way to get people interested in educational material is to put it on an enormous screen and give people 3-D glasses.

Personally, I don't know if it's an advancement of technology or if it's a gimmick. All I know is that I like it. I'm a 3-D fan and have been for a little while now.

The one theater we have around here didn't bother to do whatever it is they have to do to play 3D movies. Most of them haven't really interested me, 3D or no, but I'm disappointed I had to watch the normal version of Coraline. :(
