I've played a bit of piano and the classical guitar since I was five, but it was mostly self-taught with pointers from my father. I have next to no knowledge of reading music/music theory, but I'm willing to learn.
Still, is it too late to learn how to play the Alto saxophone, at age 20? I'm not seeking to become a virtuoso; over many years, I've developed an intense love for jazz music after taking jazz appreciation and jazz history classes. When I first heard Lester Young on his tenor sax, I was completely blown away. I am just completely in love with that sound. It's like a piece of soul.
I just want to learn the alto sax for now, because I know that it's a good place to start. I've got a part-time job and I'm going to community college right now, so I'm thinking about either taking some lessons or teaching myself with online/various resources.
