Im actually going to 14 weeks but the first 9 weeks is volunteering and I have already paid for that.

In the 5 weeks I plan to get overnight sleeper trains and to travel from Delhi to Varanasi (and Sarnath) then Khajuraho, Agra, Jaipur, Udaipur, Jaisalmer (including 4 night camel ride in desert) then back to Delhi.

I'll be staying in the cheapest hostels, except in Varanasi (where i want a view of the ganges) and Agra (view of Taj). Looking at prices i'll oly pay about £5 or £6 per night more.

Do you think £1000 will be enough? I know its a cheap country.

I think 1000 is good sum and if the way you are going to spend you can see more places.cost of living is not much and if you are going for cheap hotels its more than sufficient.

more than enough.. but try and stay safe.. none of the places you are going to have a reputation for safety.. and take the number and address of your embassy.. etc etc.. and be a little suspicious of friendly people...

As long as that dont include the price of flights etc.

Dont carry any cash and always carry your money in several different places.

None of those places are that friendly.

Now a days Indian holidays are extremal costly including hotel stay .So I dint think the amount is sufficient .Yes you can carry some cash amount of Rs 500 pound and balace you can spend through credit cards or debt cards .You will have no problem of using AT Ms in all these places as India banks like SIB,HD FC,IC CI,AXIS ,CITY BANK all have facilities of international AT Ms .You better spend mostly by cards for hotels,Train tickets ,and keep cash for camel safary(in Casmir some hotels have packages including camel SAFARI ),taxi fares, road side food stalls expenses .Your total budget for entire trip will not be more than 2000 pounds as you will be staying reasonably more days in India .Your 5 weeks trip will cost you average daily Rs 2000 per day or 29 pounds .So keeping some coushon of expenditures on plus side ,You keep extra 1000 pounds for safty .
