Irony in the anecdote about the poet and the dog?

"i am reading a story called murder in the dark in echoes 12 and i cannot understand the irony between the 2. it is about a game called murder , where you turn out the lights and put your hands around a person's neck until they scream and of course it is only for a thrill, but in this story it goes on to say..." I heard that this game was once played at a summer cottage by six normal people and a poet, and the poet really tired to kill someone.He was hindered only by the intervention of a dog, which could not tell fantasy from reality. The thing about this game is you have to know when to stop.
