Ipod connected to car stereo via auxiliary?

I've connected a red/white auxiliary cable to the back of my car stereo, and plug my ipod into the headphone socket on the other end. Now normally, the radio works in stereo, fine. But any sound from the ipod via the auxiliary cable comes out of the passenger side speaker only.

What could cause this, anyone got an idea?
