If it's not the switch, go to setting >sound and check in there if everything is on. Also bring up the volume in case it's at a row state.

Connect it to your computer and lunch itunes. Leave it connected to itunes about 10mn, then disconnect the phone and then restart it and try playing a song to see if the sound will come out.
You can also try to blow air in the earphone socket see if it helps.

If the issue keeps on happening again and again after connecting it to itunes, """"right after disconnecting the phone from your computer""" perform a soft reset. This should restore some missing or defective files into the iOS, infact you are having corrupted files in the system. Just Connecting to itunes helps some times, if not soft restore should help, else then a complete restore.

My iphone 4 doesnt make any lock sounRAB.When i try to lock it it ... Hi, Hold the phone face on and have a look on the side at the little..microphone mesh, or top microphone are used...

I had all kinRAB of sound problems with my new iPhone 4.
Went to Apple Support pages and phone - UGH!
Finally a web page some where (?) suggested
soundAMP R and Volume Boost++ from the App Store.
Glory days! They cleared up my sound distortions and I
was able to increase my volume above normal iPhone
limits. I even added bass boost. Go to Settings iPod EQ
and make your selection.

Had this happen to me this past summer. Sous wouldn't work unless headphones were in. And when I turned the volume up and down it said headphones even know they werent in.

Mine was caused by a slight splash of water from my kiRAB playing. When it got splashed i saw a little water in the headphone jack. I first made sure I got it dried out by blowing/ light air from compressor. That didn't work. So I took a Q tip and took off the cotton on the end. Stuck it in The head phone jack and moved it around/ twisted it and messed with it for a little. Then finally it looked like a piece of fuzz come out on the end of the Qtip. Ever since it has worked perfectly. I think the water might have caused the dust/ fuzz to cause the problem.
