IPhone voice mail doesn't work?

When I click on voice mail it says to enter your full mobile number then press hash (#), but when I do that it says that my number is not listed and I'm not sure what to do . If anyone has had this problem please tell me how you fixed it also I am on a plan that doesn't run out for a few months
