iPhone user thinking about going android...

if anyone's worried about the virtual keyboard and don't want to get a droid, mt3g slide, or the crappy backflip.. get ShapeWriter from the market! it's awesome. i hardly use my droid keyboard anymore!

Will it? iPhone OS 4, at least according to the list of features on Wikipedia here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IPhone_OS_version_history#4.0 simply shows how Apple is playing major catchup to Android 2.1. Can anyone spot anything of any real value that Android can't do in that list? I can sure as hell think of a few things that Android can do that isn't in that list.

If the iPad is anything to go by then it'll be an underpowered under-featured phone that all the iSheep will totally swoon over despite it costing twice as much as comparable devices that actually do have USB ports and multitasking.

Let's look at Apple's restrictive development - big companies like Adobe (yes, still no Flash for iPhone OS 4) are stating things such as "Apple restricts use of technologies required by products like Flash Player. Until Apple eliminates these restrictions, Adobe cannot provide Flash Player for the iPhone or iPod Touch.", and the fact Apple's latest license agreement that all developers must agree to states "Applications must be originally written in Objective-C, C, C++, or JavaScript as executed by the iPhone OS WebKit engine, and only code written in C, C++, and Objective-C may compile and directly link against the Documented APIs (e.g., Applications that link to Documented APIs through an intermediary translation or compatibility layer or tool are prohibited).". So no third party translation layers, no third party development tools or SDKs, no third party anything - do it with Apple's extremely restrictive way or don't do it at all. Oh look... developers are running to Android already.

Now, bear in mind that Android is fast becoming the most popular OS for people buying new phones, and that Android phones come in such a huge variety on every mobile phone operator, and you have the situation where, inevitably, Android phones will overtake Apple phones in number because you already have the appeal (most popular for new phones), and a choice of handsets and operators for everyone. This is predicted to happen by big research companies, that know more about this than I, in 2012. That will leave less incentive for people to support the iPhone. For example, my bank currently has an iPhone app, but not an Android app. This is purely down to the number of customers that have iPhones. That situation will reverse, especially when you take into account the previous paragraph (Apple's restrictive development which makes it so difficult that even huge companies are backing out).

And for anyone who thinks not having Flash isn't a big deal for the iPhone when it'll have HTML5 (Android has that already by the way), check out my blog post on exactly why that's bad. In short, the alternative, HTML5, is slower, and won't have W3C recommendation until 2022 or later. 75% of video sites on the internet use Flash, as do 85% of top 100 websites. So - iPhone 4 means you can only view 15% of the top 100 website correctly, and only 25% of video sites.

Now tell me again that the iPhone 4 will be better than any Android device out currently. IMHO the HTC Desire and Nexus One already beat it by default due to lack of Flash on iPhone, ever, and the fact iPhone OS 4 adds sod all of any use that Android doesn't already do.

You Are Talking about this

Things is better you know is battery life on the iPhone isn't particularly good, and that the screen resolution is comparatively low versus what you can get on Android or Windows Mobile.

And something more important please don't forget to vote for us http://www.wirefly.com/learn/company...g-awards/vote/

Just keep telling yourself that if it makes you feel better. Where there is open-source there is a way. Unless Apple releases their phones from lockdown there is no way ever the iPhone will best Android.

i am neither an apple fan boy, nor do i own anything apple. I own an android device and a pc.

That said, no android device is as smooth as the iPhone OS. Even the N1. Anyone who argues that is lying to themselves. With the iPhone 4 "catching up" and getting multitasking, it'll be hard to beat. Plus, if those pictures are the actual ipHone 4 to come, its one of the best looking phones out. Hd2 looks awesome, but too bad it's wm6.5.
