Iphone for sprint by force?

My friend told me that it is illegal for one carrier (at&t) to be the only one to have the iphone and that if i took an iphone to a sprint store (my current carrier) that they would have to fix it to put it on sprint, i know all the stuff about the different networks and all like CDMA or whatever. Help
