Iphone Data Plan for At&t?

I have an iphone. And when i first got an iphone i didnt have internet and at&t told me I had to get a data plan. However, I put my sim card in and it worked just fine. I couldnt get on the internet but, I had an iphone! After a while some unexplained charges came up on my bill that were said to be data charges. I didnt have a plan and i used wifi so how could that even work? At&t had no clear explanation. @ssh0l3s. Anyway. I'm wondering if you guys have ever had these experiences and if you currently have an iphone with no internet. please include whatever you can tell me. If you've had those stupid charges, if At&t tried to upgrade you to a data plan, or if how long you've had an Iphone without a data plan. I can understand Iphone is amazing with internet believe me i know but i cant afford it at the moment!
