iPhone 4 to N97 on AT&T

Hey guys,

Will be making the switch from iPhone 4 to N97, but wanted to make sure I got this straight:

  • I cannot simply use the iPhone data plan on the N97 and must change my plan from iPhone to Edge/Medianet.
  • Anyone know if they will make me give up my $30/unlimited and go to the 2GB? I would like to switch between the two every once in a while, hopefully I can and keep the unlimited but am not expecting to.

Any help is appreciated

Well thats what I would like to do and is the ideal situation.

I actually have a SIM to Micro-SIM adapter (different than a dual sim card) which I plan to use, but have read that the iPhone data plan is distinct from the plan a non-iPhone ATT smartphone would use and could potentially rack up usage charges.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/532.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0.5 Mobile/8B117 Safari/6531.22.7)

Ouch. I guess wait for an AT&T expert to answer.

I was told that you are unable to keep the iPhone data plan if you switch to a different smartphone from At&t, however you are not buying a new phone from At%t. I'm interested in knowing the answer as well.

I don't think you should have a problem with the iPhone data plan on another smartphone. The only trouble I see on a daily basis is connections to the BlackBerry servers don't give you data on any other phone, and vice versa. Most other phones are fine. You WOULD be able to keep your unlimited data if you switch to the $30 PDA Personal plan.

Apparently so! I understand that the software was buggy at its debut, but is it still that bad after 21 (correct me if im wrong) firmware revisions?

Makes sense, hopefully that is the case. Guess I should just use it with the iPhone plan and keep a close eye on my data usage via mywireless?

I'm sure the N8 is great but its too much money for a secondary phone (IP4 will remain primary) and I'm not fond of the design. White N97 seems awfully nice looking from the photos.

I think the N97 will suite your needs just fine. It will be stone age slow compared to your iPhone 4 but it will be more than capable as a backup. My N97 has been rock solid and if I hadn't tried the N8 I probably would have kept it as my primary phone a while longer. Still have it as my backup though! :buddies:

It was only 5 IIRC: v11, v12, v20, v21, and now v22. Still waiting for v30.

My N97 is still my primary, though I often switch to my N900, so you should be ok. I still have an iPhone 3G as my work phone and the N97 and iPhone complement each other well.

Yes you can keep the $30 iphone data plan and use it with any other phones. I currently have this $30 unlimited data plan. Since June, my micro sim has been in the iP4, or in an adapter in N97, Satio, ATT branded Android phone, and Unbranded Android phones without any data accessing nor billing issues.

I have used a 5800 (which is practically the same as the N97 software wise) as well as an N95 with my iPhone data plan and they both worked fine.
