I'm not a fan of the xperia play after I saw how it handled on the engadget show (one that woz was on) - seemed to be sluggish

That's probably because its only a prototype and not a released version.

If you're playing games you probably have the most selection on the iPhone. Unless you like to play Japanese games, e.g. anime laced games like RPGs, tactical RPGs, eroge, fight games, like the kind of games that laces the Sony PSP in Japan. The deep Otaku material isn't going to get past the Apple censors. If that is your gig, the PSP Phone aka Xperia Play has a lot of promise. Its not there yet, but this phone is sowing the fertile ground for it, along with the exploding popularity of Androids in Japan.

Plus you do get an Android smartphone and all the Android applications available. The Android game selection is growing nicely on their own, but then again, you can find such on other Android phones. You need to look for what makes an Xperia Play unique from other Androids and that maybe if Sony puts the Playstation Network on it, which also means lots of media like music and movies. And sooner or later, games that are unique to the Xperia Play and the Playstation Network.

If you're looking for an Android phone to do rooting and flashing and all that stuff, there are probably better phones for that.

alright thanks for all the replies. @Drillbit What makes PLAY unique for me is the controller. I want to play big games. you are right about apple having more selection, but its a ***** to play games like street fighter with touch screen. I want a controller with my phone. But again i am hesitating from switching from IOS to Android. I never used a android before.

I used the Xperia Play at Mobile World Congress.

My view is mixed so far. The PSP-like controls are tight, and it's nice to keep your hands off the screen while you play. However, all the games on view so far don't seem to be deeper. We need to see more RPGs and in-depth games.

Also, if you're going to wait for the Xperia Play, wait to see what the iPhone 5 brings in June or so. It should be faster than the Xperia Play and may have some more cutting edge games. We also need to see what Sony Ericsson can really attract for games. If it stays niche, it won't be worth it no matter what games actually do make it.

iPhone 5 will never have physical external controls and neither will it get the kind of Japanese games because the Apple Store censorship won't allow it. I mean, like do you expect something like Mortal Kombat to appear on the App Store? Rip the spinal cord off! Fatality!

Furthermore, Sony actually subsidizes many of Japanese game development so they end up being Sony exclusive titles. These are titles like Little Big Planet, Valkyria Chronicles and stuff like that.

Android is a very good mobile OS but I don't believe you should switch for the wrong reason. But if you're really interested for the right reasons, it can greatly reward you with productivity and make you more socially effective. And then again, there are also other Xperias for this too.

The one other alternative is the PSP2 itself, which may come at the end of the year and features quad cores and PS3 level graphics. This sounds like its going to be one expensive device.

im gonna have to say the X10, because 1, i dislike using itune for many reasons, 2 i prefer an android os phone. also x10 gives alot of free full version games, such as angry bird. unlike iphone4 they are mostly trials and requires payment for good games. im using x10, and not iphone4, so correct me if im wrong about iphone.

No this is not the X10 here. The Xperia Play is a new generation of Sony Ericsson Android phones, all designed from the lessons and mistakes of the X10 apparently. Thus they are far better (Xperia Play, Neo, Arc, Pro).
