Iphone 3gs vs Motorola Droid

Hey everyone, I'm having trouble deciding which phone to get--I'll even consider sprint phones. I'm looking to get a new family plan in May with my mom. My mom doesn't have a need for anything more than a basic phone; however, I'd like either one of these phones, or anything else that's good. Any recommendations on phones/plans? Also, I'm a student at the University of California, Irvine, if that helps with any discounts. Thanks!

One thing I forgot to mention: I don't need unlimited minutes or anything like that. I'd actually prefer to save my mom as much money as possible--it'll make it easier for her to sign on to buying me a good phone. :)

Now plan wise, just for you and your mom (2 Lines)
I would start out at the 1400min Plan to be safe, and see how much your using in 3 months and go from there, because it DOES NOT EXTEND YOUR CONTRACT if you change around your plan.
Then depending on how much your txting, Either add on a txt package from $5-$20 or Unlimited.

Droid has better apps than iphone? You got it the other way buddy...and I'm not talking about more games and ifarts. There are lots of very useful quality apps for iphone. Sound quality...through headphones or the external speaker? The external speaker is louder on the droid but music quality through headphones iphone wins here.
 
Also bear in mind that android only allows you to store apps on ram. So whereas on the droid you can only have 256mb worth of apps and that's it, on my iPhone it's practically unlimited. I've already got 3 gigs worth
 
I suppose that an iPhone is always better than some other portable device. This is because iPhones have the characteristics of their own. So, I will suggest you to buy the iPhone 3GS. but, still if you want to compare between iPhone 3GS VS Motorola Droid, I would like to mention about the memory. The former has 256 MB RAM with 16 GB or 32 GB internal storage. Whereas the latter comes with 256 MB RAM and 512 MB ROM, that is MicrosSD card slot.
 
For my school AT&T offers the cheapest plan. Right now I'm on a 550 minute FamilyTalk (my Family doesn't do a lot of talking) with 2 lines and BIS for $74 pre-taxes. Once my Milestone comes in and I do the SIM switcharoo with a dumbphone I'll have unlimited data and text with the 550 minutes (across two lines) for the same price. If I forgo unlimited text it comes down to less than $60 for two lines and unlimited data on one, which is the next best thing to grandfathered plans (SERO, etc.). AT&T is even cheaper for me than T-Mobile.

Verizon's discount for me is 3% lower.. but the killer is their minimum family plans are expensive (but offer tons of minutes). I imagine there is a point with talkative/large families where Verizon becomes more cost-effective.. but AT&T offered me the bottom-line lowest price.

I agree with ant1pathy, regardless of which phone you get, if you dont get service it wont matter. Ask around and find out which carrier has better service in your area and go with that phone and that carrier. I had an iphone and loved it but I counldnt make calls in my basement apartment. I have a droid and can talk all day in my apartment. The choice was clear for me. Good luck!!
 
ok OP, I have both a droid (my personal phone) and an iphone 3gs ( company's cell).
I'm a very techy person, and I would prefer the droid over the iphone 3gs anytime, but here is the deal. If you want to look cool and be envy of everyone, want a simpler but a cellphone that can do a lot, get the iphone and I would highly recommend to jailbrake it.
Mow if you are a person who doesn't care about what others say and just likes to have the best of the best, get the droid, you can also root it and get overclocked. you can do multitasking and have a qwerty keyboard which is very important for me, pretty much ALL useful apps that the app store has, the android marked has an android version of it
 
I also have both.

I was trying to help my manager to decide between one or the other, but as someone who pops the SIM from one to the other, I can't decide which I like best, so I was of no use to him.

If you have spare money, get the 3GS and an unlocked Motorola Milestone (Droid) and change from time to time. Then again, this isn't a very realistic recommendation at all, especially for students ...


I'm a student and have both though. Then again people call me crazy.
 
I also have both along with a BB 9700 and cannot see how this is feasible, particularly because you'll be dividing your call log, SMS, and e-mails between three phones which would be exceptionally annoying on any less than a monthly basis.
 
If good RF performance and call quality are important to you, I recommend the Droid. I am an Apple fan, and I really want to get an iPhone so it pains me to say that the iPhone is lacking when it comes to call quality. Many online reviews support and back up my opinion.

I hope that Apple corrects this in the next generation, but they certainly have not addressed it up to this point so I can only hope. If the new iPhone has not been improved in this critical area, then I will be staying with Verizon and getting an Android device. I may wait for the 2nd Generation Motorola Droid if it comes out this sumer.
 
I actually juggle between two phones, and been doing it for a while. A fanatic I am on redundancy. Been enough natural disasters, electrocuted snakes on base stations, coverage problems and the occasional connection drop on this island to know, having a backup connection counts. And even so often, even if the line is still standing, the data connection can also lose or one ISP gets too slow, so at least I can use data on the other.

Confusing as it is, I don't need a unified call log and SMS. My GMail, calendars, and my contacts are always unified because the pair are Android phones. Any change I make on one phone is always synced automatically on the other. Unifying contacts, GMail and calendar can be cross platform possible using Google Sync.

Anyone who uses two or more phones at the same time should use Google Sync. On Android it runs transparent on the background. On Blackberry it comes in the form of a free app, which you can set the intervals of sync. On other platforms, iPhone, Symbian and Windows Mobile, it requires Mail for Exchange, which you have to sync to Google and your Gmail account.

Before I had two Androids, I was running an Android and a Blackberry with Google Sync. Both phones are always syncing on the air. I made it into a trio with my iPod Touch, which syncs on wifi range. Well now I have two Androids and my iPod Touch doing sync.
