Iphone 3GS shuts off at 50% battery?! help!?

I have had my iPhone 3GS for about 6months and it has recently been showing some problems i received it with iOS 4.0 but since updating to 4.0.1 and now 4.1 the phone shuts down and acts as if it has no charge when it hits around 50% battery, after it shuts off it requests to be plugged into a power source and within 5mins it is back on with around 60% battery. at the moment im only getting half of what already is an appalling battery life, can someone please help!? i've heard its software related but i am running 4.1 and i thought it was supposed to fix problems like this!! thanks in advanced

Did you ever figure out this issue? I am having the same issue currently with the iPhone 3GS
