Hello, I have an iPhone 3G with 3.1.2 firmware on it modem firmware 05.11.07 (Jailbroken and Unlocked). The problem with losing the WI-FI didn`t occur because of either the Jailbreak or Unlock. Just woke up one day with it gone. As far as I`ve read on other forums, an update to 3.1.3 would solve the issue, someone said that if I cleared the history, cookies and cache from Safari, would actually work, but most of them said that it`s a hardware fault and the most reasonable thing to do would be to send it back to Apple and get a new one.
That`s not gonna happen because I bought it from someone a few months ago. Usually the wireless adapter and bluetooth have the same MAC address and kinda use the same module on the motherboard (as far as I can say, because of them both having the same MAC) so shouldn`t Bluetooth be grayed out?. I`ve tested sending something and receiving through Bluetooth and so far so good, no problem.

Still the Wi-Fi is gray and if it`s a hardware, could someone help me out with a schematic of the mainboard and a possibility to fix the wireless issue, or maybe there is some other idea different from the ones that I`ve mentioned, to fix it.

Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

step 23. it's WIFI connector (it's not GPS)
step 24. how to remove WIFI Connector

be carefull, if you aren't an expert

Thanks for the info, i`ve got it, I have another one for spare and I`m gonna change it right now. Will let you know of the result. Let`s hope that it`s not an issue on the motherboard and I just to replace it. Will be back with a result.
I`ve opened the iPhone, took everything apart and saw that the connector was a little damaged, nothing that a replacement couldn`t fix.

Still no luck, I`ve replaced it, but as far as it looks, that just for signal not the actual wifi adapter, in case that breaks you`re unable to have any wireless signal or very low. Any other ideas?
I`ve checked and rechecked the connection between the signal antenna and motherboard and still nothing, everything was disassembled with caution and assembled back, still no WI-FI.

Looking for additional info and schematics, in case I find anything I`ll let you know.

bro if it is 3g why dont you first restore it with 3.1.3 original firmware not custom. Than check the wifi ... even if it doesnt work you can always jailbreak it with redsnow or spirit and unlock it using no wifi ultrasnow using cyder .. atleast you will be sure that it is not software issue ... alway check software first before touching hardware..

PS: i had the same problem with 3gs v.3.1.3 BL 04.26.08 had jailbroken it using snowbreeze and everytime i ulocked it wifi greyed out... after restoring it to 3.1.3 and jailbreaking via spirit and unlocking with new ulrasnow ,, ALL good

thanks and goodluck
Mike

Restored with an original 3.1.3 Firmware, everything went well, but still no WI-FI (Wi-Fi Address N/A) Modem firmware 05.12.01. The baseband was 05.11.07, so it practically replaced it, still not working.

did you check before jailbreaking ? if wifi was ok or not ..

Another hardware issue is power IC that causes wifi to be lost , check search forum you will find it ..

thanks
mike

Ok, here is the result, it seems to be a hardware issue, I`ve ran iRecovery and tested with - type "radio readnvram" which came out with nothing, so as far as I`ve read, in case it`s a software issue, that can be solved without a problem, just restore the MAC address which is similar to the Wi-Fi. But since it is not the case and I got no output message it means that the problem is hardware related. I`ll check other threads about the power IC aswell, maybe I can sort out the problem without having to rehot the Wi-Fi IC. I can do it but you never know what else might go wrong (just being cautious).

I found a solution (and sadly is the one that I hope I didn`t have to come to. As soon as I reheat the Wi-Fi IC and if it`s working, I`ll post the result. Thanks for all ur help so far, I really appreciate it.

I finally got it to work, rehot the wi-fi IC carefully and now it`s fully working, I can get signal, wi-fi MAC address, everything is fine. Thanks to all that have helped me, hope this will help others aswell.

Tethryus,

I appreciate all the good work and the great photo of the wifi hardware fix. I'm ready to do it. Problem is, I don't know what the &#^% "rehot" means. Does it mean heat up the actual chip until its connections re-solder? Or does it mean re-heat every chip connection? I would think the first way would fry the chip, but then I don't know anything about ICs.

Thanks,
Mike

Well, what I used to rehot, was a hot air station, some flux (sk 10) and Rosin. Used a medium fuse and low air pressure, so I won`t **** the other small parts near the IC away. Then carefully touched the IC to see that it moved and then it went back in it`s place and, that was it. The whole process took around 5-10 mins and i didn`t damage anything.
