Investing: debt and equity?

Ok, I am not looking for anyone to do my assignment for me. I am so lost on my assignment and need some guidance here. Let me tell you that I know absolutely nothing about business and investing. I have read the text material for this and have discovered that "equities" are stocks and "debt" is bonds. I have also read that perhaps the mix should be like 60/40, does this seem correct? Please read over the following and tell me where I should start? Here's what I was thinking. To do a mix of like 60/40 but I am not sure how many of each stock or bond to choose. Like I said, I am not wanting anyone to do my assignment for me, I just need someone to steer me in the right direction because I am lost. Do I need to pick some stocks and bonds and project how they might behave over the next three days based on their recent performance? Pease if you can, give me some pointers on the following:

Assume you are a fund manager with a $10 million fund, which you have to invest in equity and debt. Select your portfolio and calculate the value of your investment daily for the next three days. Explain your reasons for your choice of investments in your portfolio. Would you like to change the portfolio after three days and why? Give reasons with suitable examples. In your posting, include an explanation for how your investments performed, and, in hindsight, what you would like to do differently. You may use Yahoo Finance on the Internet for creating your portfolio.

Thank you so much for your time and helping me get on track with where I need to begin.
