Has anybody seen this great movie? I find it facinating and mesmerising, one of my favourite movies of all time. If you haven't seen it and would like to here is the story (SPOILER)






Set in present day San Fransisco, Louie (Brad Pitt) tells young reporter (Christina Slater) his story of being a Vampire. The movie progresses and we see him being "born to darkness" and we are introduced to Lestat (Tom Cruise) The two live together for years, but Louie hates his eternal suffering. Frightened that Louie will leave him, Lestat turns a young orphaned girl: Claudia (Kirsten Dunst) into a vampire during childhood. Outraged of never growing up, Claudia resents Lestat and she attempts his murder, only for him to return to gain revenge on her - and Louie. Letat is set on fire, as Claudia and Louie flee to Europe as New Orleans burns. They arrive in Paris in 1870 and meet a 400 year old vampire called Armand (Antonio Banderas) who leaRAB a vampire coven including Santiago (Stephen Rey) Armad falls in love with Louie, but knowing he will never leave Claudia he plots her death. Louie knows Claudia's endangerment, he makes Madeleine (Domziana Giordano) a companion/mother to her. However, the coven bursts in upon them and drags them to the Theartre des Vampires (their home) and lock Louie in a coffin - behind a bricked wall. Claudia and Madeline are arrested into a big airshaft, where the sun kills them. Louie burns the Theartre Des Vampires in revenge for murdering his beloved Claudia. The story then see's him leave Armand - knowing he gave orders to destroy Claudia and returns back to America. The whole film revolves around his emotions and pain. Infact, once back to the present day in the film we are told that all his passions and some happiness in his life had gone once Claudia had died (the only person he ever loved)

Decent film of a tedious book.
If you want a vampire tale by someone who can actually write, read Fevre Dream by George R.R. Martin. Why it's never been filmed beats me. :)
 
Can't say I agree there. The movie (thankfully) removes the need for Rice's turgid prose.

I didn't realize they'd made a movie of The Vampire Lestat. I know they kinda squished TVL and Queen of the Damned into one (godawful) movie - 'Queen of the Damned'. Is that what you're referring to?
 
I liked Rice's prose. The film watered down the book a lot. Claudia was nowhere near the chararcter in the book. And the ending was apalling, I don't see why they had to change it.

It was a masterpiece compared to Queen of the Damned though.
 
Read that years ago and I agree it would be a good movie. I still wish someone would do justice to Salem's Lot though I haven't seen the 2004 version yet.
 
The new Salem's Lot is pretty good and although some liberties have been taken with SK's original it's a more satisfying movie than Tobe Hooper's version.
There's much more sense of the town itself which was barely visible in the first attempt and Rob Lowe does a much better job in the lead than David Soul.
It doesn't help Tobe Hooper's cause that his movie is available in two versions, one of which is about 1 hour shorter than the other. :confused:
