internet w/ phone modem?

My mom lives in LA.

She needs a wireless router, but she told me she uses a phone modem???
I told her we don't use those anymore
and that it would be similar looking but a bit wider..
which would be a cable modem.
but she said no.
She uses Time Warner Cable/AT&T for cable
and that she can tell the difference- and it's a phone modem cable.

And she even said it runs similar or faster speed than cable :D

Can this be true? Or is she mistakening...
 
She uses AT&T DSL SERVICE.

Her home phone line plugs into the modem, and is connected by USB.

Yes, it CAN BE faster than cable.
