Internet slows down when i video chat?

I have Verizon internet not fios just plain verizon. anyways i have macbook aluminum and whenever i videochat with people on ichat my internet goes really slowly and as soon as i close the video chat the internet goes fast again. What can i do to prevent this stop this or fix it? help please?!?!
o and i just recently downloaded snow leopard and ever since tht it has been slow
 
Your network connection can only send a limited number of bits per second.

If the (total number of bits the computer wants to send this second) > (total bits that can fit in your network's capacity), then the computer has to prioritize.

Most computers will choose to send real-time video as soon as needed, while waiting for bandwidth to become available before sending the other stuff.

The fix: A faster internet connection.
