Internet Connection: Network Cable Unplugged. Sony Vaio, Xp?

I made some changes to startup in msconfig, via looking at a micrsoft forum. now everytime i'm connected to the internet, my Network Cable Unplugged sign keeps popping up, then Acquiring Network Address, than its fine for another 5 min. and keeps shutting on and off.

I have a Sony Vaio PCV-RX830 Windows XP SP3. Road Runner Cable Internet with Scientific Atlanta DPC2100R2 modem
