I have to travel for work and one of the most annoying things I've noticed is that there is no "standard" for getting wireless internet access in US airports. Some have Cingular, others T-mobile, some even offer free services. Deep down, I think that much like Hudson News has managed to franchise locations at nearly every major US airport, a wireless carrier could make a mint by offering wireless internet access across the board, allowing users to pay once and use the connection at every airport they transfer through.
But I digress...until my wireless utopia shows up, I need to find some other way to access my info online. Now, I don't have access to an exchange server or a blackberry server and have to get my e-mail from our corporate server (IlohaMail). If I can't find a "one payment covers all" pay-as-you-go wireless access point, tethering my laptop or Axim to my phone via bluetooth would get me just as far. Sometimes I have to do product demos on the road too and for those I need pretty good bandwidth to access our remote servers.
So, with all this info...what carrier/plan/phone would be a solid tethering option for me with good access speeds and a broad set of connection options?
I have considered T-Mobile due to the ability to connect to hotspots as part of their data package which (I believe) have better bandwidth than the cellular data service they offer, but I'm a n00b and am likely talking from the wrong hole. Help!
