interested in switching to T-mobile

Looking into switching from At&t to T-mobile.

I am very curious about the t-mobile wi-fi calling and the my favs. Putting it together on the T-mobile website it could save me close to $20 dollars a month. If I switch I plan to get a BB 8120.

My questions are:

1.) Does the wi-fi calling work well? Does it really seemlessly switch over when you go out of wifi range.

2.) If you upgrade your OS to another carriers does it affect t-mobile favs?

You might wanna check your coverage first. $20 isn't worth the switch if you can only have good service at home---and make sure you are including the charge for the hotspot at home deal

coverage is not a problem in my area... both have great coverage here in Nashville. The way I understood the wi-fi calling was if you wanted unlimited you have to pay for the hotspot calling package... but if you wanted to just use the wifi in case you were somewhere you did have good coverage you could use the wifi and be deducted off your calling plan.

Is that right?
 
I am probably wrong, so I will back out now, but I always was under the impression that you had to pay for the hotspot to use wifi calling.
 
Here is a very good post from ranx that explains the wifi and hotspot from TMO. He is talking about the 8900, but it is the same for any wifi TMO phone.

Basically heres how it works :

The UMA hardware is built in the 8900 and it works with ANY wifi router.
The 8900 will ALWAYS connect to UMA no matter if you have the UMA service on your cellular subscription or not (be it Rogers or Tmo).

If you do have the hotspot addon, your calls wont come out of your monthly minute allocation aka the Free Unlimited UMA Calling for xx$/Month option.

If you do not have said addon, your call will STILL go over UMA but you will be billed for them the same way calls are billed if youre on the cellular network aka coming out of your monthly minute allocation.

Meaning, if you dont subscribe to it because you do not need that because you have a home phone but one day you find yourself at a cottage with NO reception, your can STILL use UMA (neat huh ?) and this work over ANY wifi not only a special router.

So, what he is saying is you do not need hotspot in order to use wifi. For me wifi is faster at browsing than edge and I Love it!
 
I really want it... I love my 8100 but it is ancient haha. I still don't know if i am ready to sign up for another contract. I am currently out of contract and I kind of like the freedom. :P
 
Well, keep thinking about it then. I personally like TMO and have never had a problem with them. I like the lower prices and they do not force you to have a data plan.

Maybe you can find an unlocked one on Craigs List or here on the stacks and then you could use it on ATT w/o starting a new contract.
 
I also have an 8120 on T-Mobile. This is one of the best BlackBerrys which in combination wih T-Mobile makes a great setup. I highly endorse these two.

If you are switching to TMO, then you can just buy an 8120 that is TMO branded and not worry about anything. Just put your TMO sim card in, set up your email and services books, register and your good to go.

If you stay with ATT, then it needs to be unlocked to use it. Not sure if the wifi would work. I don't have an ATT account.
 
It should work fine on Tmo if it is a Tmo device to start out with; Unlocking does not affect features.

My personal experience: I used an unlocked Bold on Tmo and I had no UMA or wifi calling, and I also think the wi-fi was funky, as I could not browse the web with wi-fi during a phone call.

With my official Tmo device (8900), in-call wi-fi browsing works fine. As does UMA calling, and it switches fine when I go out of range. It will disconnect me if I disconnect the router, however.
 
the 8120 is a solid device and if you like the flip is a solid device. it doubles the amount of internal memory as well and runs on the 4.6 OS. with the myfavs and the hotspot calling you can probably save yourself more than 20$ monthly depending on what plan you go with. thats a lot of options for free minutes. so you can talk it up as much as you want without having to worry about minutes overages and large bills something that is very much needed with the economy today. if you have any other questions about t-moile services features etc let me know i'm a t-mobil rep and i can give you a hand if interested of course
