Interested in photography, where to start...?

I am a sophmore in high school... and I love photography. I haven't really found anything else that I would want to go to school for. Right now I only have a small digital camera (canon digital elph, sd750) but I am looking into digital SLRs. I like canons, but I have also used sony, panasonic, and nikon. I do not like sony. Nikon is probably my favorite. Nikon and Canon seem to have the best picture quality.

Any suggestions for cameras? (SLR only)
My price budget is probably nothing over $600, but send me anything. Just not ridiculous priced cameras, even though they are the best.

my best bet to starting photography is to take a photography elective at your school, such as my school which offers digital photography I & II

that's the camera i used to have.
it's 609 dollars plus shipping with amazon.
not sure about best buy or circuit city.
that would come with the basic 18-55 mm lens.
which isn't the best but it works. especially for amateurs like us.
i personally am a huge fan of canon.
nikons can be easier to use because they use more buttons and knobs rather than digital menus.
but in order to get equivalent qualities of photographs.
you almost have to pay twice as much with nikon.

the framing in the first two pictures seemed off.
but the other three were very pretty.
my favorite was the butterfly. the other person said the background was too much.
I know what they mean but i thought the background added interest.
like someone wouldn't just look at it and think oh, pretty butterfly picture and move on. they would take it in more.
also bravo, i can never catch butterflies.
 
Either Nikon or Canon will be a good choice. I would get either a Canon XSi or XS(probably more of the XS since you have a budget), or a Nikon D80 (Used) or a D40. I looked at some of your pictures. Their nice but you probably could work on composition. For instance, the one with the butterfly has too much stuff in the background. If it was just all green it would make it so much better. But try out the different camera systems that you are going to buy. No use buying one that someone recommends and you find out you hate it. I can say go buy all Canon! but you can find out you hate the Canon's feel in your hand or menu system, etc. Decide on which system will suit you best. I choose Canon for its reliability in fast action sports. Maybe you don't need an autofocus that is fast in action sports, then you might get a Nikon for its imagine quality with it's lenses.
