Instinct or just a reflection of my desires?

I've been liking one of my friends lately, but I can't tell if he likes me back or not. Mostly because we have gotten closer recently and he could simply been enjoying my company and such, rather than seeking it because he has a crush on me. For a few weeks though i've sort of had a gut feeling he felt the same, and in my dreams (especially last night) when i've talked to people about the situation, they reassure me that he's "into me" and "dont worry" and that he does like me. It's probably just my subconscience mind trying to console me in my confusion, but could it also be my instincts telling me something i should know?
