Installing a Hitch on a 01 Ford Escape...Bumper removal?

I purchased an aftermarket hitch for a 2001 Ford Escape from U-Haul. Everywhere says it is easy to install....but we are having issues with getting in on with the back plastic bumper.
Do we need to remove the back bumper? If so, how do we do it?
Yes, it came with instructions, and no the instructions didnt say anything about removing the bumper. The problem lies in we can't reach the holes it says we need to reach, because the rear bumper is in the way.
 
you should have gotten instructions with the hitch. each hitch is made for a specific model car unless you bought a '''fits-all''model

The Bumper on the car is plastic--it wont hold anything.
Where are you supposed to bolt it to?? do you know??
