installed ourselves but can we still have the "free" install?

We installed our dish and receiver ourselves, but have an install booked in case we had problems. Everything turned out just fine, but it would be awesome if the installer could fine tune the satellite for us to maximize our signal. Are we still allowed to take advantage of the "free" install if we're already set up and activated? And if we are, will the installer be willing just to adjust the dish? or will he not want to touch anything since we did the install ourselves?

That's what I was thinking as well. Just figured it would be great if we could get him to fine tune the dish since he'd have all the proper tools and would be much faster at it than me yelling the signal strength to my husband through the window while chasing after a couple of kids. :)

If you have a cordless phone with intercom function it may eliminate the yelling...

Actually, the window is close enough to him he can hear me in a normal voice, but the yelling comes in because I have to be louder than the kids. :)

So, maybe I am just stressing out about aiming the dish for no reason? We aren't having any troubles at all yet, but basically all we did when setting up was aim so we got an above 90 signal on satellite 91, transponder 11. Then we just made sure we actually had signal on the other transponders and satellite 82. We didn't do any further adjustment to try and maximize signals on everything that we could. I figured it would be easier for the installer to do this since he'd have one of those satellite finders or some other fancy tool.

Officially you are NOT entitled to a "Free" installation as it is already Installed and active as haystack said.

In my experience if the installer actually decides to be a nice Guy and assist you in "fine tuning", he will not get paid as Express Vu will not pay his Company.

If he does assist you, give him a tip, he should officially refuse but hey we all break the rules.

I don't think there is a space shuttle mission scheduled for this and peaking the satellite for you may affect the other couple of million subscribers :)

Sorry, couldn't resist.

So, I cancelled our "free" installation. I am actually surprised that they let me book it several days ago, AFTER we were already activated. Now, since I saved ExpressVu $99, I wonder if they'll give me some sort of credit or bonus...:o:p

Please tell me you said that with your tongue firmly planted in your cheek......lol

You actually saved Express Vu $175, that is what they pay the Installation Companies for a 9200.

You may be horrified to know that as a "Self Install" you are not covered for the normal 90 Warranty as it was not professionally installed.....

If you have problems, just plead the 5th, and Express Vu might not realize you did it yourself.....

Hope it all runs smoothly from here on....

of course! :)

Well, if that's the case, I want my $2!! (Pretty in Pink anyone?)

And the installer would have loved us because the work would have been so easy since all of our satellite wiring was run when we built the house.

Can I get info on this 90 day warranty anywhere? What exactly does it cover? When I called to book the install, BEV told me that FutureShop was supposed to book it for me and asked why they hadn't. I had no idea why they hadn't. Future Shop didn't tell me a darn thing about install, so we just followed the install instructions that came with the dish/receiver.

So, ya I'll plead the 5th (do we have that in Canada? :D) because I truly had no idea about the professional install/warranty until we were mostly installed!

The 90 day warranty is basically an installation warranty but the installation Company still gets to return for free if a Switch fails etc.

I trust you will run beyond the 90 days as you seem to have done everything right, which is not always the case with the Pro Installations....lol

Gotcha, thanks!

And we did have either a bum switch or power inserter at the beginning. But Future Shop just swapped the switch and power inserter for us, no questions asked. We did purchase the extended warranty from Future Shop though, so that might have been why it was so easy to swap. We normally never purchase an extended warranty, but the price was reasonable and after reading around on this forum, I thought it might be wise... :D But, we have up to 30 days to return the extended warranty if we decide against it, so I am still thinking about it.

I keep reading about DishCare as well but couldn't find info on BEV's web site about it. I might look into the cost of that and see if it's cheaper than the Future Shop warranty.

I am not too familiar with Dish Care either but from reading on here, I believe it is $6 per month and covers everything EXCEPT the Dish......If I read it all correctly.....

If $6/mth is correct, then the FS warranty was a much better deal. I think it was $60 for 4 years.

And if Dish Care doesn't cover the dish, me thinks they need a new name.... ;)

I was always told that once a receiver is activated only Express Vu could provide service on it, that no store would take it back

Dish care covers all the equipement...but doesn't cover tech's visit let's say, in the case you dish has moved.

There was a few month ago a warranty covering the cost of the technician (not the equipement) that was in trial in Ontario for 6$ a month. I belive that this insurance is no longer offered

Well Future Shop's extended warranty is listed as satellite system on the receipt and the employee talked about hard drives failing and other problems that could creep up (as his sales technique), so it seems to me that they'll take care of the replacement if something goes wrong. Wouldn't make much sense to sell an extended warranty that didn't actually warranty.
