Infomercials to Replace Cartoons on FOX

Yeah, I was also wondering how infomercials bring in lots of money, but I'd rather have them than a lineup consisting of bowdlerized foreign programming.

Me too, but I doubt that'll happen anytime soon.

I think infomercials pay the network for their airtime.
The network doesn't care if people don't watch. So long as their still get money, that's all that matters.

That's a nice thought, but nowadays all of those shows are under the ownership heel of some giant corporation, who is either keeping them locked away in some vault or is planning to keep them exclusive to DVD. Affiliates don't make any profit off of kids' shows, so there's no real incentive for them to air them.

This is awful! Fox had an amazing heritage of cartoons! And now, Jetix is almost gone too, thanks to Disney XD!

Yep, 4Kids get the ad revenue. And yeah, 4Kids was kind of pissed that not all Fox affiliates were airing the block (or some were airing it during the wrong days or times), so they decided to sue Fox. The CW is much more consistent with their kids lineup, which is why 4Kids decided to go with them.

But yeah, this is a pretty disappointing development, although it wasn't totally unexpected.

I just hope that my local Fox still has Beakman's World, so they could air that to fill in these two hours...

I mean, this same affiliate has a tradition of doing "Student News" segments during the Saturday line-up (and during The Simpsons), so I figure they might at least air something they still have the syndicated rights to, if only to allow their segment series to live...

Yeah, the only affiliate I've ever heard of that doesn't air CW4Kids on Saturday is MY affiliate (and it's really only the 10-12AM slot that gets moved to Sunday morning).

(On a random note, my CW affiliate and Fox affiliate are ironically in the same building)

While I do like your positive attitude regarding CW4Kids, that block doesn't affect how long Toon Zone last. It definitely brings up some more cartoons for us to discuss here, but there are also other channels with cartoons and other means in which to watch other cartoons that we talk about. The state of Saturday morning cartoons doesn't affect the state of cartoons themselves.

Well... it would be a decent way to get their shows on television. But that's probably true. Honestly FOX should have to pay someone else to provide them programing not the other way around.

Viz is too cheap to even finish work on most of the series they have, of course they wouldn't buy up a block.

I don't see any company that would either want the block or have the means to buy it. Whatever, I bet the affiliates won't screw over the infomercial guys like they did 4Kids.

Ah, it's just Fox taking the easy way out, guess you can't really blame them.

Funimation? Viz? Anyone?

As much as I want to see 4Kids relinquish control over two networks, I want some other company to its place.

Yes... but you're forgetting the key thing here. It's not the affiliates that will be pocketing this money. It's the network. While I'm sure the affiliates would not terribly mind airing their own infomercials, getting all the profits from them, I do not see them being happy with airing infomercials for the network. In fact, they'd probably rather air children's programming, since at least then, they could sell a few slots to local advertisers. I'm doubting that'll be the case with this network block of infomercials.

I think, given all the talk about how The CW might not be around all that much longer, the affiliates are being asked to "take one for the team" and let the net generate some revenue.

Yeah, my Fox affiliate (Fox 61) has always, even to this day, embraced children's programming. Not only do they have those Student News segments that I mentioned running (and they've had a new one every week since 1991), they also advertise Safari Tracks and did advertise Beakman's World a LOT in the past year...

I might lose some respect for them if they go along with this infomercial crud.

Two letters explain why these shows were "embraced" -- E. I.

They helped fulfill the FCC requirement, which is the only way they'd be on the air in the first place.

I hate to say that I don't care all the much. I usually watch Nicktoons and CN on Saturday mornings, and (on occasion) CW 4Kids. Haven't even glanced at FOX's Saturday morning block in half a year, so I they could replace it with four hours of a picture of a monkey in a hat for all I care.
